Stitch Patterns

Knit it Now patterns can be used in two ways:

1. We show you a finished sweater with a stitch pattern and all the details and you knit it as shown

2. You can use the basic shape and substitute your own stitch pattern. Knit it Now doesn't know what stitch pattern you use, it is doing the math and providing the numbers for you based on your stitch and row gauge. The instructions read "cast on in pattern" and "knit straight in pattern".

Ease

Fit of a garment is a personal choice. You may like your sweaters skin tight (and have the figure to pull it off), but others feel they need a bit of "wiggle room" to be comfortable.

Knit it Now Sizing charts indicate the body measurements that are used to size our garments. The individual designers add ease to various sections of the garment to obtain the style they are creating.

The pattern description should have an indication of the amount of ease in a garment. Once you have built your pattern, you can compare the measurements on the piece legend and the sizing chart to determine the exact amount of ease the designer included.

Very fitted (0 ease to negative ease)
Fitted (+1 to 1.5 inches)
Semi Fitted (2.5 to 3 inches)
Loose (4 to 5 inches)
Oversized (6 to 8 inches)

Size Charts

Knit it Now uses standard sizing charts. The measurements indicate actual body measurements.

Ease is noted in each pattern description and can be reviewed by comparing the schematic in the pattern to the body sizing charts.

Printing the patterns

  • If you prefer to print your patterns without color, set your printer to "print all colors as GREYSCALE".
In the print dialog box for your printer, there is a tab where you can make this change.

Don't use the "print all colors as BLACK" setting.

  • Save paper and ink. Get familiar with the setting in the print dialog box for your printer.
In the print dialog box, you can choose which pages to print.

Don't want to print the first page? Enter 2-5 and pages 2,3,4,and 5 only will print.

Only need pages 2 and 5? Enter 2,5 and only these 2 pages will print

Pattern Updates

We're human, sometimes we make mistakes. We're also constantly adding new content, DAK files, videos and educational information.

Instead of having to research errata for patterns you own, Knit it Now alerts you of pattern changes. If we find a major error, we'll send you an email. For updates like an added video, you'll be alerted in your library the next time you view your pattern.

To receive your updated pattern, simply re-size it and the newly generated PDF will contain all changes.

Want to know what changed? Click the link and the notes about updates will display.

"To err is human, to forgive is divine"

Will you be selling DVD's?

At this time there is no plan to sell DVD's of our content.

Adding bust darts with Knit it Now

Bust darts add extra length over the fullness of your bust.

Even in knits, bust darts can improve the fit of your garment. When you look in the mirror, does your sweater hang parallel to the ground? Do you tend to pull down on the front of your sweater when you wear it? Consider adding bust darts.

In sewing, a bust dart is a fold in the fabric shortening the side seam (and subsequently lengthening the center front). In knitting we can use short rows to accomplish the same thing. Holding stitches allows you to knit more rows at the center front than the side seams.

Knit it now patterns indicate the location of bust darts. They are optional and we provide a link (within the pattern)to a calculator to do the math for you. Your stitch and row gauge is automatically entered in the calculator as well as your current row.

When knitting a dart, turn off your row counter and follow the instructions from the Dart Formula Calculator. When the dart shaping is complete, don't forget to turn your row counter back on!

You can also find the Dart Calculator from the main menu - Pattern Generator -> Tools. This tool is a premium tool available to Knit it Now members who have purchased pattern credits.

We do not offer an option to print the learning library lessons.

  • Knit it Now is and on-line application. Being on-line there is no "errata" page. Errors can be quickly corrected and additional information can be included quickly. Your lessons and reference material is never out of date!

  • In response to requests, we will include stitch charts and other materials in printable form when we can

  • To protect our contributors (and to stay in business) we are constantly on the lookout for those unfortunate few who think that a subscription gives them permission to share Learning Library and pattern content.

New Learning Objects in the Learning Library

When new content is added it is automatically marked "new" for 30 days.

If significant changes have been made to a technique or lesson it is marked "new" for 30 days.

Knitting Terminology

Seaming Stitches

Knit It Now does not add seaming stitches. Calculations are performed over actual measurements.

If you are working on a gauge of 5 sts or less to the inch, you may want to add a seaming stitch to your knitting.

Public verses Private Side Facing

Knitters often talk about the right and the wrong side of their knitting. This can be confusing because there are times when the purl side of stockinette is used as the "right" side of the fabric.

Knit it Now uses the terms "public side" to refer to the side that will be seen when the garment is worn and "private side" for the hidden side of the garment.

Dynamic Patterns

Your measurements show decimals ... why?

Dynamic pattern generator ... doing the math for you ... very precise formulas. Aren't you glad you don't have to work out all the calculations?

The patterns have a lot of pages ... why?

Unlike traditional patterns, we are not limited to fitting a pattern on a single page. We don't need to fit it into the design of a book's pages.

Our goal is to create easy to read patterns without abbreviations and "code" to translate. When appropriate we offer both charts and written instructions.

You don't have to print all the pages! When printing a PDF, you can choose which pages you want to print. You can also navigate our PDF format patterns using Adobe Reader's bookmark and thumbnail features

TO PRINT ONLY THE PAGES YOU WANT:

In the print dialog, separate the pages you want to print with COMMAS - 1,4,6 will only print pages 1, 4 and 6

Enter 1-4 and pages 1,2,3 and 4 will print(use a DASH)

Traditional Patterns verses Dynamic Patterns

The Knit it Now Pattern Library is a collection of knitting patterns in 2 formats.

Traditional Format

  • Designed in a specific gauge with a specific yarn, the knitter is required to match the gauge or re-chart the design for best fit.

  • Each printed pattern contains all sizes.

  • Patterns from the pattern library can be purchased individually.

Dynamic Patterns are a collection of knitting patterns with many more features:

  • They are designed so the knitter can use any yarn in any gauge. All the math is done for you, so you can get down to what you love ... knitting!

  • Each pattern generated is printed in a single garment size, reducing the clutter of unused sizes on the page.

  • The patterns can be re-sized as often as you like

  • The patterns can be generated multiple times in different gauges.

  • Electronic shape and stitch files (DAK) are included when available

  • Links to tutorials are included in the pattern where appropriate

Is there a time limit for building or sizing patterns?

No, any pattern you purchase is available in your library, with no time restraints.
Hmmmm... if a Knit it Now pattern had an expiration date, would that create more FO's (finished objects) in the knitting world? We work best under deadlines .....

Webinars

What is a Webinar?

Webinars are conducted online with meeting software that enables the attendees to view the instructor’s computer and watch as they move through the various screens of the presentation and any additional materials they present.

A high speed internet connection is required.

Students will be able to ask questions during the class and time will be available after class for a question and answer period as well. If you’ve never participated in this type of class, please don’t hesitate … it’s as easy as watching TV!

The software works on both PC and Macintosh computers and is simple to use.

Are there long distance charges to join a webinar?

You can listen and contribute to a webinar in 2 ways:

1. Call the phone number that is included in your confirmation email. Long distance charges do apply.

2. Use your computer speakers to listen without using your phone. If you have a built-in microphone or a separate microphone with your computer the instructor (and other attendees) can hear your voice. Headsets are relatively inexpensive (probably less than some long distance charges) and can be very useful if you plan to attend more than one webinar.

Select your audio mode in the meeting software dashboard that appears when you log into the meeting.
