Punchcards and Stitch Patterns - Replay Live Archive

Even though today's topic is titled "Punchcards", the concept also applies to manual and electronic machines
One of the biggest mysteries for machine knitters is stitch patterning. We'll tackle this topic using punchcards.
Unless you only plan to knit plain 'ol stockinette, understanding stitch patterning on the machine is CRITICAL to your mastery of your machine.

. . We've got some confetti because. I'm so excited to be here.. . Welcome, welcome to the April Knit Club. from Knit It Now.. . We're here today to talk about. patterning, stitch patterning.. . So no matter what machine you have,. whether it's a manual machine or. . a fancy-dancy electronic machine or. a punch card machine,. . stitch patterns, knowing,. understanding stitch patterning goes. . a really long way. in improving your knitting.. . I'm always surprised when knitters are. confused by punch cards. . or stitch patterns.. . I'm not sure exactly what they think is. going to happen when you have. . something that looks like this.. . It's got holes in it,. and they just sometimes think. . that something magical is going to happen. by sticking this into their machine or. . using a stitch pattern,. and they're just confused and in the dark.. . These things can be really. mysterious sometimes.. . So let's clean up some of that mystery.. . Let's do away with some of that mystery. and talk about stitch patterns. . for all machine knitters today.. . If you have any questions,. please let me know in the chat.. . If I happen to miss your question,. contact me afterwards.. . Sue@knititnow or use the Contact Us. button at the bottom. . of every page of our website.. . I'm happy to answer questions, help,. commiserate, whatever.. . I'd love to talk to you. about machine knitting.. . It's what I do.. That's my favorite thing.. . Again, if you're new, let me know.. . Kathy says, I consider myself. a relatively intelligent person.. . I see that you made it very clear the live. event was going to happen at one Eastern.. . Yeah, after about half a dozen people. emailed me and said,. . When's it going to start?. Where are you?. . And I was eating my breakfast.. . Good morning, Sherry.. . All righty, so stitch patterns.. . Stitch patterns, punch cards.. How do they work?. . What do stitch patterns do?. . If you think about a knitting machine,. you've got needles, they work. . and they knit stockinette.. . They come in and out, they knit,. stockinette, just like you would expect.. . If you want to do something a little bit. different, you have to tell the machine. . that you want to do something. a little bit different.. . Stitch patterns control how. the needles are positioned.. . When needles are positioned,. let's go to the next screen here, sorry.. . Whenever you do any paterning,. whether it's automatic patterning or manual. . patterning, the needles travel through. channels underneath the carriage.. . And if you've not looked at the underside. of a carriage, there are channels there,. . and the different levers and buttons. of your carriage direct the butts of the. . needles through a different channel.. . That different channel controls whether. the stitch knits or slips or tucks or. . picks up another color, say for fairisle.. . So. no matter how you're telling the machine. . that you want to pattern,. what's happening underneath is. . that the butts of the needles are. traveling through a different channel.. . Again, the channels then are controlled. by the stitch patterns,. . by the settings of your machine.. . In this example, it is an LK.. . You can see the channel. very, very clearly.. . And if you see those little white wings. on either side there, those are. . the little side levers of this machine.. . And if those side levers are engaged,. you can see that the butts of the needles. . will travel through the different channel.. . And that's what causes stitch pattern.. Whether you're.... . Like here, you're pulling the needles out. by hand or you're letting the machine pull. . the needles for you, select the needles,. organize the needles.. . However, those needles are getting. organized, they're going. . through a different channel.. . And then again, depending on the settings. of your carriage, you're going. . to get a different stitch pattern.. . All right, I got ahead. of myself a little bit.. . So that controls slip, tuck, and fairisle.. . Again, you can be used as a card,. or you can use electronics, or you can. . use a manual needle pusher or something.. . Some way to choose needles.. . Now, for manual machines,. a lot of folks are... It's really interesting. . because a lot of folks want to knit. . obviously, on LK,. you want to knit stitch patterns.. . So you need to use your needle pusher or. count needles to figure out what stitches. . need to go into a position so. that the carriage picks them up and forms. . the stitch pattern that you want.. . So this is on a manual machine.. . So anytime I'm talking about punch cards. or electronics, the same thing. . holds true for the manual machine.. . It's just that you're the one. that's choosing those needles.. . To choose those needles is interesting,. and I always recommend. . that you use a cheat sheet.. . And we have some printable. cheat sheets here.. . You can find them at knititnow.. Com/cheat.. . Print those out.. . They are sized specifically. for your machine.. . We have ones for the Taitexma mid-gauge,. and we've got cheat sheets. . for the LK, for the . . But recently somebody said,. . Well, I want to use my card.. . I have this card in my hand.. . I want to use my card for my LK.. . So it's like, Gosh, she just went through. my brain like, yeah,. . she's got to take a highlighter,. take a cheat sheet,. . and highlight in all the little boxes.. . Well, that doesn't make a whole lot sense.. . So I got to thinking about it,. and what did I do with them?. . Here they are.. . I went into DesignaKnit.. . Now, you could do this with your printer. as well, but I changed the percentage.. . I blew up the design in DesignaKnit.. . So for example, I've got a stitch. pattern here in DesignaKnit.. . We printed it %,. it would look like this.. . It would be a punch card size.. . But if you If you print that. stitch pattern in DesignaKnit at %,. . you get six millimeters divisions. between each one of these little dots.. . You would just fold this along your stitch. along the line,. . the row that you're knitting on,. and then you could choose. . your needles based on that.. . Just line it right up.. . They're going to line up.. . So I've also discovered. that if you knit at .... . Sorry, it was for a it's. a millimeter machine.. . So if you blow your image up to a size so. that you don't have to copy it to a cheat. . sheet, you just have your. cheat sheet right here.. . So if you get a punch card that you see. that you've got a copy. . of it online, in, right?. . Take that and play. with it with your printer.. . Blow it up to % or to a percentage. until you can get that card. . lined up to your needles so that you. can more easily select your needles.. . Now, another way of selecting. needles on this.... . And this is how you would select them.. . You just line that line up.. . I was waving my hands, but here's a photo.. . That's a little bit better, isn't it?. . Another way of selecting needles for. the LK machines is the needle Beetle.. . This is a separate little device that you. can purchase,. . and it's an, I believe it's eight-stitch. repeat,. . so that you manually You manually choose. your eight stitches according. . to your punch card, right?. . You manually choose them,. and then you run the needle Beetle across.. . It memorizes that needle arrangement,. and it will then repeat the needle. . arrangement across the needle bed.. . So manual knitters,. don't give up on stitch pattern.. . You can stitch pattern,. and it doesn't have to be painful.. . Use some cheat sheets,. figure out some ways to cheat around. . not having an automatic pattern device.. . When I say automatic pattern device,. I just mean a punch card or electronics.. . Does that make sense. for the LK knitters?. . Well, welcome, welcome, welcome.. . We've got lots of folks here.. . Thank you so much for joining us.. . Okay, so that's manual knitters.. . So I wanted to get that out. of the way first thing.. . Anything we talk about as far as punch. cards are concerned it really does. . apply to you as well.. . I'll come back to that.. . So when it's time to knit in pattern. on your machine, no matter what machine. . you have, you need to tell the machine. that you want to knit in pattern.. . On the Brother machines,. it's with the KC button.. . Okay, .. . I want to knit in pattern.. . I flip the button, and now it's ready.. It's ready.. . But as Is it going to do anything?. . No, there's a couple more steps.. . So on your Silver Reed machines,. you've got some buttons and levers. . that you need to set in order to tell the. machine that you want to knit in pattern.. . So you're saying,. Stop knitting, stockinette.. . Open up those channels for me.. . I want to knit in pattern.. . The second thing that you need to tell. the machine is,. . Which stitch pattern do you want?. . So you've got a cam lever, generally.. . The CAM lever will tell the machine, I. want fairisle, I want tuck, I want slip.. . So the second step is to first tell it you. want to knit in pattern, and then you. . tell it what pattern you want to knit.. . And then the third step is saying,. Hey, machine, I want a specific design.. . I want this design.. I want this.. . I want this.. . You have to give it instruction.. . And these cards and the stitch patterns. are nothing but hole/. . no hole, on/off, black/white.. . Machines are really very, very. binary, just they're on or off.. . So if there's a hole, the needle. is going to be in one position.. . If there is no hole, like in this area,. the needles will be. . in a different position.. . Again, depending on how you set your cam,. which stitch pattern you're using,. . what's going to happen.. . Does that make sense?. Let me know if that makes sense.. . Karen. says there's something called a telematic. . that's similar to the needle beetle.. . I think the needle beetle was also copied. from something that maybe. . Brother had at one time.. I'm not sure.. . Sharon says, How do you figure out. printing to get seven millimeters?. . Sharon, contact me offline. and I'll do the math for you.. . I'll just try it in DesignaKnit.. . All I did was kept trying it.. . I tried it %,. I tried it %, printed it.. . Nope, %, no, printed it.. . And I just kept trying, trying, trying,. trying, trying,. . so you got to .. . But remind me, I'll be. happy to do that for you.. . Pauline says, It's dinner time soon.. . Thank you for joining me late in the day.. . Okay, so this makes sense for now.. . Stitch patterns are just on, off, yes,. no, pull a needle, don't pull a needle.. . That's all they are.. There's nothing mysterious about them.. . However, what the mystery comes in is. which one is which, which card is which.. . So in this slide, it was just basically. the third step is Here are. . the instructions, whether the instructions. are a punch card or they're electronics or. . you're manually, you're telling. the machine, Here's what I want you to do.. . Here's what needles I want to go through. the channels underneath. . and create a stitch pattern.. .. so something to think about is stitch. patterns are always, always,. . always centered in the middle of the. knitting machine, especially punch cards.. . So in this example, we've got the gray. box here would be your knitting machine.. . You're at left one, zero, right one.. . That card is going to be centered. in the middle of the machine.. . It's something that we often. forget or get confused.. . So with punch cards,. you need to remember that.. . Now, electronic machines,. you can control that.. . But.... . So for example, if I was knitting this. sweater,. . you'd see that my stitch pattern would be. centered in the middle of my cardigan or. . my sweater, whatever,. the front of my sweater,. . and then it would be repeated across. the row all the way across both ways.. . Something to keep in mind because if. you're knitting, let's say, a cardigan,. . here's my cardigan.. . If I centered my knitting on the machine,. so left , right ,. . the card is going to be in the middle. and my design is going to be. . in the very middle of my cardigan.. . So let's just say the card was. this Penguin that I've got here.. . So I would have a Penguin right. in the center of my cardigan if I. . positioned my cardigan. in the middle of the needle bed.. . Now, I'm talking punch. I have two cards here.. . If I want my Penguin, I don't know. . why I can't think of that word.. . If I want that Penguin,. maybe on the center of the cardigan,. . so half of him is on one side and half. of him is on the other,. . I would have to position my knitting. in relation to the punch card.. . So the punch card would sit still. in the middle, but I would. . cast on left of zero or right of zero.. . Does that make sense?. I hope that makes sense.. . This is punch cards.. . You're a little bit limited there.. . With an electronic machine, however,. you can generally have an electronic. . machine and you tell it where zero is.. . You have the electronic machine. position where you want your design.. . So it makes it a little bit easier.. Cheat sheet.. . Okay, thank you, Marjorie.. We'll get that fixed.. . Or Matt, if you can. just add that, fix that.. . I screwed it up.. . You make the seven millimeter. increases available to everybody.. . I have a Brother 8,. which is seven millimeters.. . Chris, absolutely.. . You guys, just both of you, whatever,. just nag me in an email,. . and I'll definitely let you know. what it is because it was.... . See if I can get it right this time.. . % for 6 millimeter. and % for millimeter.. . So I can play with that. for you and let you know.. . Thanks, Matt.. . All righty, so let's talk about.... .. Let's talk about stitch variations.. . Something else you can do with a punch. card is, let's say on the left. . here is my original stitch pattern.. . It's just we're going to tuck or slip or. whatever for two stitches. . every other stitch for two rows.. . On a punch card,. you can often do double high.. . So you just a little lever that you flip.. . So you're going to be doing whatever this. is, whether it's tuck or slip or fairisle,. . for four rows instead of two.. . You can get some really interesting. effects that way by using double high,. . and you don't have to punch another card.. . So you can just take your one by one card. and make it look like this original. . without punching a second card.. . Something to keep in mind.. . On electronic machines,. you can also do double wide.. . So this would be the same stitch pattern,. but instead of just one stitch or every. . other one stitch,. it's going to make it two stitches. . and skip two, two stitches and skip two.. . So double wide.. . Again, very interesting things that you. can do without redoing a stitch pattern. . by just changing the variations.. . You can do double wide and double high,. and it would look more like this.. . There are other stitch variations. that you can do with electronic machines.. . You can reverse images,. you can turn them upside down.. . I think on some machines,. you can actually turn them like . degrees or degrees,. so it goes this way instead of this way.. . Stitch variation,. something else to explore with stitch. . patterns that you can make some really. interesting, especially for really simple. . stitch patterns like the one. that I'm showing there.. . You can do some really interesting things. with them depending. . on what machine you have.. . So you've got a whole stack of cards.. . All right.. . So I've got this whole. stack of cards here.. . Or you're looking in a magazine or one. of the old Stitch World books,. . and you're seeing all these. beautiful stitch patterns.. . How do you know which is which, and how. do you know what you can do with them?. . Well, it's hard,. and it's mostly experience.. . I'm going to give you some hints as. to which patterns. . work best with which technique.. . But some of it is just. learning and experience,. . and some of it's just plain common sense.. . So Let's take a look.. . So the double wide was. slightly wrong displayed here.. . All right, let's go back to it.. . So if we started with every other stitch. for two rows,. . we're doing two stitches for two rows. and skipping two stitches.. . Is that not right, Karen?. . I don't like to lie.. . All right, and knititnow.. . Com/cheat sheets with an S, works too.. . All right, so Karen,. let me know if I'm telling a fib here,. . and the other thing is to try it.. . Just try the different things.. . Pick up some black and white yarn,. knit in fairisle,. . do a very simple stitch pattern.. . Just maybe your one-by-one card, which is,. I think we all pretty much. . know what a one-by-one card is.. . You've got a hole, no hole, no hole, hole.. . And then it's the reverse.. . If I have one here, whatever.. And try it.. . Try double wide, try double high,. try some of the different variations,. . especially if you have. an electronic machine.. . It can be really fun.. . All right, I'm probably just. saying it backwards, guys.. . So how do we identify which card. works with which technique?. . Look at this card right here.. . It's mostly black.. . So what's that telling me?. . It's telling me is that the white. stitches, the white holes or the white.... . Not holes, not holes,. the white sections that are not punched.. . I think I have it right here.. Let me get this card.. . You can see that the white sections. that are not punched. . are going to either tuck. or they're going to slip,. . or something's going to happen different. with those four stitches right here.. . Because this is mostly black,. I would immediately identify. . this as a tuck stitch.. . Slip stitch as well.. . Could you use this for fairisle?. . Absolutely.. . It'd be interesting.. . So you'd have just little short little. columns of a different color.. . That one would be pretty as well.. . So mostly black or mostly holes,. . tuck and slip, sometimes fairisle.. . So here's another one that's pretty, and. you're going to see lots of pretty cards.. . So what could you do with this one?. . It looks like of a flower.. . I guess I got that backwards there.. . So what could you do with this one?. . It's got lots and lots and lots of holes.. . However, it's also got white spaces all. next to each other.. . I wanted to say the word congruent,. and I'm not sure if that's. . the right word or not.. . But in these sections,. you've got white spaces.. . In the previous tuck one, there were white. spaces, single column of white spaces.. . You didn't have two white. spaces next to each other.. . You can't tuck two stitches. next to each other.. . So this definitely would not be a tuck. card because you've got lots of white. . here that are next to each other.. . You could use this for fairisle.. . Your floats would be as. long as these white spaces.. . It's not too bad.. . One, two, three, four,. a four-stitch float, that's not too bad.. . You could use this for thread lace.. . You could use it for slip.. . So your slip strands, your slip. . floats, would be this many stitches wide.. . That's either three or four stitches wide.. . So you could use this one for slip.. . You could also use this one for weaving.. . You could also probably use it. for the garter carriage if you do that.. . So you've got. purl stitches and knit stitches.. . So you'd have a really pretty. design with the garter carriage.. . So next, I got some cards from someone,. and she had them marked. . ribber punch cards.. . And I just scratched my head and scratched. my head because you can't do. . stitch patterning on the ribber.. . That terminology just. didn't make sense to me.. . But what she was referring to was double. bed jacard, which is using your. . ribber and patterning on the main bed.. . So you've got stitch pattern. going on the main bed.. . You use a card, you use a stitch pattern. on the main bed, but you've got needles. . and work on the ribber. for double bed jacard.. . And you can usually tell double bed jacard. because there's a lot of white. . space between the rows.. . And I put this color behind here so. you could really see the shape of this.. . If your card isn't marked ribber or DBJ or. something,. . you can pretty much. examine this and notice that it's. . every other row something's happening.. . And that's the way multi-color. slip stitch works, every other row.. . So identifying double bed jacquard,. they're going to look something like that.. . Which brings me to a point, I give you. permission to write on your punch cards.. . The first time I saw this,. I was a little horrified.. . The little Catholic school. girl in me, we never wrote in books.. . Oh my gosh, They never wrote in books.. . You never dog-eared books.. . You had to treat books like gold.. . It's the way I was raised.. You don't write on things.. . But I give you permission to go ahead. and write on your punch card,. . write along the side or write anywhere. on your punch card what. . it is you've discovered.. . If you like this card and you've used it. and you used it for a specific technique,. . go ahead and write on the card.. . You have my permission.. . The nuns won't come and hit you with. a ruler because you wrote on the card.. . So this was genius.. . The first time I saw it, it's like, oh,. my gosh, this says My Favorite Tuck.. . I love this.. . This says Fair Isle for Vest in Mary Lynn,. something, whatever.. . Must have been the yarn that she used.. . So write on your cards.. . So if you find one that you like. no matter what, and you found used it best. . in tuck, then mark right on it. that you used it best in tuck.. . So the last punch card I want to point. out to you is a lace punch card.. . You can often tell these lace punch cards,. again, because there's a lot of white. . space,. which would be the needles that you're. . transferring for lace are the holes,. the white space is where you're knitting. . or moving your carriage,. your lace carriage.. . You also can tell lace cards, generally,. they'll have some indicators on the side. . as to when to move your carriage or not I. think that's just a brother thing,. . but forgive me if I misspoke there.. . But lace cards.. . So you might find a half a dozen lace. cards in a pack that you come up with.. . Or if you're looking in a magazine,. you'll see a diagram that looks. . something like that for a lace card.. . Now, could you use it for something else?. . Well, I suppose,. looking at the one that's on the screen,. . I suppose you could knit that in fairisle.. . It has some really, really long floats,. and you've got some rows in there. . that don't have any color at all.. . So that doesn't seem to make. a whole lot of sense to me.. . But being able to identify the cards. and the stitch patterns by the techniques.. . This came up because a knitter was asking. . about how to organize her punch cards. . and how to keep them secure and protected.. . And she wanted to put all the tucks. together and all the slips together. . and all the fairisles together.. . And we had to remind her that a lot. of cards you can use for a. . number of different things.. . So segmenting them and organizing them. that way probably wasn't practical.. . We were trying to come up with another. way, another place that she could store. . the cards because they aren't all eight. and a half by eleven, so your normal. . office supply things don't really work.. . So if anybody has a clever way. of storing punch cards, just let us know.. . The question was asked in our. forum in our community.. . So just go to knititnow.. . Com/community and let us know if you've. got a clever way of storing punch. . cards that you can protect them.. . They don't get all crunched and destroyed.. . Some of the cards, commercial cards,. have right or left on the card number.. . I don't know R and L.. . I'm sorry, but think about it.. You could.... . Well, we've got A and B and C and D.. . Actually, this one has A and B and C D.. . So I'm sure that in the instructions. of when they used this card,. . they told you to insert it with A down.. . B would be reverse, obviously.. . C would be upside down.. . We talked about that . or degrees or whatever.. . So with punch cards,. you could do variations by turning. . the cards upside down or right or left.. . Pauline says, I have a box designed. for punch card storage, but I don't. . know if you can still purchase them.. . Pauline, if you could let us know. the dimensions, that would be helpful,. . and maybe we could go to the container. store and find something close to that.. . L for Lace and R for ribber.. . Thank you, Marjorie.. . Marie-jo, what have you done?. . Ruth, done it with handâ?¦. . done what with hand manipulation. in the KC button.. . Lace on a Brother .. . Yes.. . Think about manually pulling needles.. . If you're using a Brother machine,. it will pre-select needles for you.. . So if you use a. If you use a lace punch card,. . you run your carriage across,. it's going to pre-select needles.. . You could then take those needles. and transfer them and make your lace.. . It's really clever.. . That would be for brother only.. Yeah.. . Marjorie says, Most of my standard punch. . cards fit nicely in legal size files.. . Okay, we can let the knitter know.. . She was looking for some safe. way of protecting punch cards.. . All right, I did want to go back to this. because we're talking about stitch. . patterns, and I want to tell you. about something that's coming up here.. . If you're a DesignaKnit user, we're. doing a workshop in a couple of weeks.. . It's going to be a hands-on three-hour. workshop, three hours or. . whatever it takes, live.. . We're going to be talking about. Graphics Studio, sorry,. . Stitch Designer and Graphic Studio.. . A lot of times we will find something. in a magazine and find a stitch pattern,. . and it's printed out, right?. . That's what Graphic Studio. is really good at.. . We could take this. that maybe somebody gave you Excuse me,. . that somebody gave you or you found. in a magazine, you found a stitch pattern,. . you take it into Graphic Studio. and convert it into a DesignaKnit. . stitch pattern format.. . So even if you're using a punch card,. you could then take that pattern,. . stitch pattern, and use it. with a punch card or electronics.. . Graphic Studio is. another mysterious thing.. . It can work sometimes,. and other times it's just. . Frustrating as all get out, you're. tearing your hair out with Graphic Studio.. . So this workshop is going to.... . Excuse me, again.. . The workshop is going to prevent some. of that tearing the hair out stuff and. . work through learning how to use. Graphic Studio to convert some of these. . wonderful patterns that we find. in the old Stitch World books.. . Trying to find one,. I guess I don't have one here,. . but some of the old pattern books.. . And some of the old pattern books. have the pages have deteriorated. . and the colors muted now.. . Take them into Graphic Studio and they're. muddy and you can't do anything with them.. . So we want to explore. that in this workshop.. . We'll start with a very clean. scan from something, right?. . A very clean.... I think we were doing a snowflake.. . We take the snowflake, we scan it,. we take it into Graphic Studio.. . Boom, boom, boom.. . You've got a DesignaKnit. stitch pattern.. . The second one is muddy and messed up. and dirty, and the image itself is all. . crooked and more typical of what you get. when you look at stitch patterns,. . either from things that you find. online or that you scan yourself.. . So the second one is dirtier, harder.. . We're going to explore more. of the features of Graphic Studio.. . And then the third part of the workshop. will be taking those motifs and using them. . with original pattern drafting or. just with garment pieces, right?. . So you're going to take that Snowflake,. you're going to put it down the sleeve.. . You're going to take that Snowflake. and you're going to stick one. . right on the chest of a sweater.. . You're going to take that Snowflake and do. a hem or a border at the bottom. . of a sweater and position that motif.. . So we're going to create the motif,. put it into stitch designer format,. . and then use it with some garment pieces.. . So again, that is in a couple of weeks.. . That is Saturday, April .. . We will be starting at AM Pacific,. just an hour earlier than this.. . And this is how the whole time thing got. messed up this morning is. . because of this workshop.. . And again, it'll be three hours.. . Workshop, we'll be demoing live.. . Then you can go off by yourself,. try it with your DesignaKnit, your. . version of DesignaKnit on your computer.. . There's a walkthrough. and a recorded video.. . So if you can't do it just from the first. live or your previous experience,. . there will be a walkthrough. so you won't be lost.. . Then we can come back, talk about it,. see if you had any problems,. . and then move on to the next section.. . So we're I'm going to try and do. that for three hours and. . not just talk about or watch videos.. I want you to do it.. . I want you to create these. stitch patterns from a nice clean scan. . and one that's not so nice,. and then use the stitch pattern.. . Those three things are things that folks. have really, really been asking a lot. . about, and hopefully you'll. join us in that workshop.. . Pauline says, The Punch Card box is . and a quarter inches wide or . centimeters, centimeters. high or seven inches high.. . That's pretty deep, centimeters. or three and a quarter inches deep.. . She cut cardboard to fit inside. the box to compartmentalize them.. . So I'm assuming. that they're stored this way.. . Yes, Pauline?. . They're not laying flat,. they're stored this way.. . And then you put. dividers in between so you can. . compartmentalize the ones that you use and. the ones are the ones or lace or whatever.. . Thank you for doing that.. . So, Marie-Jo, I'd love to see the results. of your lace experiment on your .. . That'd be lace on a bulky machine. by using the fact that Brother. . machines preselect the needles.. . So it's going to tell you.. . And you could even do that for,. let's say, cables, right?. . You could program punch card with cables. so that it pulls out the needles. . that you need to cross for your cables.. . Think about that one.. That would work.. . So there's no counting.. . One, two, three, four, five, pull, pull,. pull, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, pull, pull, pull.. . The machine will pull them for you.. . Can you use DesignaKnit. with any knitting machine?. . Absolutely, yes.. . The only thing you can't do is obviously. download stitch patterns. . to a manual machine.. . But you can create garment shapes and. . follow the knitting with the interactive. . knitting, like a knit leader,. a charting device.. . It's an electronic charting device.. . You can create stitch patterns,. and you can create punch cards,. . and you can create stitch. charts, like the ones I've been waving. . here in front of you, the charts.. . So I created this in DesignaKnit,. and I can use it on the LK or my. . Titexma or , even though. they're just manual machines.. . So yes, you can use. DesignaKnit with any machine.. . Double-bed jacquard,. you need specific cards.. . Some tuck cards look superb. with full needle rib.. . Tuck with full needle rib,. absolutely beautiful.. . Yes.. . So again, when I first asked, how do you. know what to What do we do with these?. . A lot of it is. you just have to think about it a little. . bit, what's happening. with this card, right?. . So this particular card looks. like there's a lot of black here.. . This card could be used for fairisle.. . This card could be used for.... . Could not be used for tuck. because there's two stitches.. . These white sections here are two stitches. side by side, but you could slip this.. . It'd be beautiful diamond. shapes in slip stitch.. . So part of determining which cards you can. use is just experience,. . thinking it through, and ask if you've. got one and you don't know, or try it.. . All you can do is just try it.. . The workshop will be recorded,. and absolutely, and it will be. . available for a limited time.. . Then the material in the workshop will be. going into the graphics Studio. . course at LearnDesignaKnit.. . So did I have a link there?. . Yeah, it's LearnDesignaKnit or learnDAK/kickstart.. . So all the material is there and ready.. . We'll be doing the live in Two weeks?. . Two weeks, I believe it is.. . All righty.. . We got anything else going on?. . What else have we got going on here?. . Here at Knit It Now, we've been. doing some things with patterns.. . We've got some new paths coming up.. . You might find some. different things showing up when. . you go to work with your patterns.. . Let me see if I can get it to happen here.. . You can see that.. Let me. . You'll notice that when I went to patterns. . to find a pattern, there's a new little. button here that's called a Guide.. . If I play the guide, it's going to give me. some help as to what's. . going on on the page.. . So let me see.. . See, we need help with finding a pattern.. . We can just click, click,. click and read what it says.. . Select the category, go next.. . It's telling you how to use this page.. . So you're going to see more. and more of these little guides.. . We've got them on a few places now,. and patterns is one place. . where you'll see those guides.. . If you don't want to see. the guide, just close it.. . It's fine.. That's fine.. . And it's not going to come back.. . It's not going to bug you unless you hit. the little button and ask you for help.. . So for those that find sometimes you get. a little lost at Knit it Now,. . what we're trying to do is add some guides. and add some walkthroughs, so it makes. . a little bit easier to find what you need.. . Cheryl said she found her box. for her punch cards at Target.. . She can go get her. boxes and post the size.. . That's great.. Thank you.. . Thank you, thank you, thank you.. . Kathleen says, I have magic cams. for my standard gage machine.. . I've forgotten what the magic cams do.. . Is that positioning a stitch pattern on.... . I'm sorry, I've forgotten. what magic cams do.. . Let me see if I can go to We go to learn.. . I'm going to close this.. . Go to >learn, >glossary.. . >Magic Cams.. . Used along with the point cams and edge. pins, the magic cams control the needle. . selection when knitting isolated motifs.. . So I guess you can position your. isolated motifs using magic cams.. . So all I did was go to learn to Glossary. my magic glossary, and I can remember what. . magic cams were because I had forgotten.. . Does anybody know if a Singer Chunky. machine has magic cams?. . I'm assuming that these are a standard. gauge thing, but don't quote me.. . I couldn't even remember what they were.. . Okay, so that's all we have. new here at Knit It Now.. . We've got the guides coming up.. . We'll get our time zone business taken. care of, and we've got this. . new workshop coming up.. . Also, if you haven't joined. our community, please do.. . We've had lots of activity. in the community and folks meeting. . each other from around the world.. . The idea here, you don't have to be. a member to use our community, knititnow/community.. . It's brand new.. . We I really like the way it's laid out.. . It's much easier to follow. than our older one.. . It's also easier to find things.. . It's got a great search bar at the cross. the top that searches everything that you. . can find topics. that people have talked about.. . You can also direct message people.. . So if you don't want to publish something. publicly, you can direct message anybody.. . You can direct message me if you'd like,. and we can talk privately. . without doing email.. . Just do it through within the community.. . And there's some new features. in the community as well that we. . may be releasing to help.. . We just want to build community.. . We don't want you to feel like you're all. alone and being the only. . machine knitter out there.. . As I said earlier, I always cringe when I. have to tell people,. . I teach people how to use knitting. machines, and they don't know what it is.. . So I keep a picture of one. and say, This is a knitting machine.. . This is what it is.. . I don't want you to feel. badly about being alone.. . Pinky says, Chunky, bulky punch cards,. is it a twelve hole.. . So punch cards do also come.. . We've got the twelve. . repeat and a repeat.. . What I've been waving here are repeats.. . There are also twelve repeat cards.. . I also recently discovered that the twelve. repeat cards are not interchangeable. . between the Toyota machine. and the Silver Reads.. . The cards are very different,. so be aware of that.. . If you're looking for repeat. punch cards,. . you find out whether they're. for a Silver Reads machine or if. . it's Singer Studio, or if they're for. Toyota, because they are very different.. . Singer is a hole.. . So I came across this interesting thing.. . I'll take the last couple of minutes here. to show you a little. . device that I came across.. . This is called a PS, and it was. for the Singer and machine.. . And what this is, is a punch card reader.. . You stick the punch card in,. just like you would any punch card device.. . And then.... . I lost it.. There it is.. . Then you insert this needle pusher.. . Basically, all this is,. is a needle pusher.. . You insert it in, select the needles,. and the pushers then. . can be used to pull needles just like you. would any other needle pusher. . that you use on your machine.. . So these position them. according to the punch card.. . The punch card travels around just. like any other punch card machine.. . It's a really cool little tool.. . I wish there was something like this. for the other machines that we use.. . And this is very,. very specific to that Singer Silver. . Studio, whatever, and .. . I'll be doing a video on this.. . If you're interested,. it'll also be available for sale at some. . point because I don't have that machine.. . So if it's something that you're. interested in, just let me know.. . I do have that machine.. . It says, If you want to have fun,. put a hole into your standard . stitch machine and see what happens.. . Absolutely.. . You can get some really. interesting things.. . Punch card dimensions are brand-specific.. . Brothers holes, Pfaff and Passap.. . I lost it.. . Has So. the standard for Brother and Silver Singer. . is , and those are interchangeable.. . The only difference is you have. to remember that the card. . goes down inside the device.. . And so row one on a Brother machine.. . Row one on a Brother machine would be. different than row one on a Silver Singers. . or what other machines are there?. I don't know.. . I'm drawing a blank.. . Go to knititnow/punchcards, I believe.. . I'll make sure there's. an S on the end of it.. . No S on the end of it.. . Let me go there and show you.. . There's a whole classroom on punch cards,. which is something I should. . have mentioned earlier.. . So if you are interested more in this. topic,. . there's a lot of information about using. punch cards and where they fit. . into the machines and the differences. between the machines.. . There's a whole section on that,. on which machine goes where.. . Yeah, row five for singer machines,. . row 7 for brother, and I forget.. I've got it here somewhere.. . It's here in the video.. . Anyways, just remember that the punch card. has to go down, so you may see row 1 up. . top, but that's not the row that's going. to be being read by the fingers inside. . the machine because it's. going down inside the machine.. . So be aware of that.. . And there's a whole video on that and. the differences between the machines.. . Cheryl said that she. found a stir light at.... . Was it Walmart?. . I don't remember where. you said you found it.. . And she gave the dimensions. there in the chat.. . And I've lost the chat.. . All righty, so what else have. we got going on here, guys?. . Anything else?. . I think I've covered everything. I wanted to cover for today.. . So until next time, let's see if I can. get back to the chat and see if I don't.... . I don't want to ignore anybody.. . And if I didn't see your comment, please. just remind me and nag me, sue@knititnow.. . Let's see what I have here.. . Have you heard about using a cricket. machine to cut punch cards?. . Absolutely.. . And it is very intriguing.. . We had a conversation about that, I think,. in the community, and I believe. . there is also a video about it.. . You can also Google it.. . There's folks that have spent a lot. of time working with the cricket. . machines to cut there.. . And so instead of punching each and every. hole, the cricket machine cuts. . the holes for you a lot faster.. . I just don't need yet another hobby, but. If that's what you're interested, I. . don't need any more machines in my house.. . It's Knititnow/punchcard or punchcards.. . Matt, is it with an S or not?. . Go to the Classrooms,. go to Learn and then classrooms,. . and look for punch cards,. and you'll find this whole subject there.. . We also have done previous. lives on punch cards.. . You might be interested in that.. . For members, you can see the replays.. . If you go the live area, Knititnow/live, you can see the replays. and just search for punch card.. . So we did some a little bit. different topics about punch cards.. . So if you're interested,. check that out as well.. . All right, Pauline needs. to get to her dinner.. . Sorry from keeping you for your dinner.. . Go eat it while it's still warm, Pauline.. . So thank you again,. everybody, for joining us.. . Thank you for your support of Knit It Now.. . As always, I'm here if you need help, if. I can answer any questions or do anything.. . I love talking machine. knitting, so let me know.. . Sue @ Knit It Now.. . Until next time.. Happy knitting, everyone.. . Bye now..

Cherie S OK- you answered the line questions-- thank you! |
Marjorie M Have you heard about using a Cricuit machine to cut punchcards. Sounds intriguing. Havenât tried it. |
Matthew F knititnow.com/punchcards |
Cheryl D 18x13x7.5 made by Sterlite |
Maurie H row 5 for singer cards and row 7 for a brother machine |
Rosemary J Please do offer a video on how to use the PS150 for the Singer 150/151. |
Cheryl D i just posted box in cafe area for folks to see |
Marjorie M Silver Reed SK155 is a 12 hole punch card. The Brother bulky is a 24 hole. |
Cherie S What do the black lines mean on the bottom of the punchcards. It seems that you are supposed to pick a line that matches your machine to start the pattern. |
Maurie H But if you want to have fun put a 12 hole into your standard 24 stitch machine at times it is really great. |
Karin R punchcard dimensions are brand specific. Brother is 24 holes, pfaff/passap has 40, don´t know about others |
Maurie H yes the singer 155 is a 12 hole |
Pinkie O Chunky/Bulky punchcards is it a 12 hole? |
Cherie S I use a legal-size portable box which comes with colored folders and plastic tabs for organizing the few cards I have. I put the original cards that come with the machine in the front. |
Kathleen F I have magic cams for my standard gauge machine. Is there a way to do something similar on a Singer chunky machine? |
Cheryl D I found my box for punch cards at Target, after the program toay I can go and get my boxes and post later today. |
Karin R Brenda, that is possible - but for double bed jaquard you need specific cards. Some tuck cards look superb with full needle rib |
Maurie H Can you use design a knit with any knitting machine. |
Pauline P Yes, Sue. Stored horizontally. The box is plastic so can be wiped clean. Very robust. |
Sandra C Will the workshop be recorded for future viewing if you cannot make it? |
Pauline P Sue, the punchcard box is 34cm (13 1/4") wide, 18cm (7") high and 9.5cm (3 3/4") deep. I cut cardboard to fit inside the box to compartmentalise the punchcards. I hope that helps. |
Marie-Jo C Thank you, Ruth S :) |
Marie-Jo C Thank you, Maurie and Mary-Ann, I thought it was impossible even with hand manipulation...I'll give it a try! |
Anna H is there something like garter carriage for silver reed machines? |
Brenda S Can you use a non ribber card with a ribber? |
Marjorie M Most of my standard punchcards fit nicely in legal size files. |
Patsy F I store my cards in a legal size 3 ring notebook in page protectors. |
Ruth S Marie-Jo - I've done it with hand manipulation and the KC button. |
Marjorie M L lace r for ribber |
Pauline P I have a box designed for punchcard storage, but I don't know if you can still purchase them now. |
Mary Ann B Mary-Jo. You can knit lace, but it would be all hand transferred. |
Marjorie M Some of the commercial cards have an âRâ or âLâ in the card number. |
Maurie H Brother only, singer you just use the same carriage for lace. |
Marie-Jo C Is it possible to knit lace with a Brother 260? |
Maurie H I always do that is the only way I will remember what I did. |
Matthew F still sharing screen |
Dawn W Double high, not double wide? |
Karin R It doesn´t match the double length double hight |
Matthew F LOL ok knititnow.com/cheatsheets also works |
Karin R I think the "double wide" pattern was slightly wrong displayed here? |
Marjorie M if you say so. Maybe Iâd said the plural âcheatsheetsâ when I tried. |
Scott V hi all |
Matthew F the url is also https://knititnow.com/cheatsheet |
Joy G Hi from France ðð |
Matthew F Its fixed |
Marjorie M The cheat sheets are at: https://www.knititnow.com/cheat-sheet You need the hyphen! |
Chrys M Could you make the 7 mm percentage increase available to everyone? I also have a Brother KX350, which is 7 mm |
Maurie H It all make sense for now |
Rhonda I Yes, makes sense. |
Karin R The Vistamatic NG-H3 had something similar to the needle beetle, I think it´s called Telematic |
Linda H Hi from the Poconos, PA |
