The instructions for tuck were excellent and had I remembered the book when I started, it would have been easier. This is a combination of a textbook on the Japanese Language with emphasis on the characters, combined with a description of how Japanese machine instructions and knitting patterns are published. "The basis of a Japanese pattern is a detailed drawn shape of each garment section and the minimum of explanatory text." This is an excellent reference for anyone translating vintage manuals, magazines and patterns in Japanese. Although the majority of the book focuses on the Japanese language "The ability to read Japanese text is less important than being competent with a charting device and understanding the information given on the drawn diagram"

For many years there has been a gap between hand and machine knitting, with hand knitting having a reputation for being more conservative and less adventurous. Today, as more and more knitters experiment with both types, there is a need to bridge the gap and also to give hand knitting a firm basis for future developments by introducing an internationally recognised system of pattern notation. Kathleen Kinder does this by first exploring the history of pattern working in order to clear up any misunderstandings

By Tricia Shafer now Tricia Edwards:

I love to manipulate the stitches into interesting textures and shapes on my knitting machine. This is far more interesting to me than fairisle or intarsia designs. Something about getting my fingers next to the yarn, and digging in with my tools that is so satisfying.
,br> This book is a collection of twisted stitches to create trims to start any machine knit piece. Each trim starts at the cast on edge of the knit, but can easily be added to necklines, armholes, or other edges of knit. If you can use a 1, 2 and 3-prong tools, you can do the machine knit techniques needed for these trims.

Plus all techniques used to create the twisty trims are illustrated with step-by-step color photos.
