Excuse me for the frog.. . Today, we're going to talk about hoods,. . and we've got lots and lots. and lots to cover.. . So I hope that you're going. to stick with me to the end.. . We've got just. all sorts of things to discuss.. . Let's get started.. . Tina from Germany today.. . Welcome, Tina.. . Sandra from Canada.. . Dawn from sunny Southwest Ohio.. . I'm glad it's sunny there for you, Dawn.. . I hope it's not degrees.. . All righty, let's get started here.. . Here we go.. . Here's what we're going to cover today.. . We're going to talk about. four ways of charting a hood.. . Now, there is no reason why you have to go. . out and you want to make. a sweater with a hood.. . I know it's hard to think about right now,. but it is going to get cold again soon.. . You want to make a sweater with a hood,. and you can start searching Ravelry or. . start searching around and looking for. the perfect sweater pattern with a hood.. . Well, you don't really need to.. . It's very easy to add a hood. to any knitting pattern.. . We're going to talk about a bunch. of different ways to do it.. . The basics of it is understanding. the construction of hoods.. . So I think we're going to spend a lot. of time with that as well today,. . not only how to, but what to do. to create your own hood pattern.. . So I hope you got the message.. . Even though there was an echo,. please try Betty Bottch.. . She's down in the lower right-hand corner. . of the website, and she can give. you the information that you need.. . We can ask Betty questions.. . They're called prompts.. . We're going to give Betty a prompt of. how do I knit a hood?. . And she's going to go out on Knit It Now.. . She's not going out to the internet.. . She's going out to Knit It Now to. answer your question.. . So she's going to answer my question of,. How do I knit a hood?. . She gives me some detail and she also. gives me a link here in Knit It Now.. . Again, she's searching. Knit It Now information.. . She's not going out to the internet. for the information.. . She sends you off on some Wild Goose Chase. to YouTube or somewhere else.. . She's going to keep you. right here in Knit It Now.. . Let's ask her another question.. . Where is the hood pattern?. . You can find the hood pattern in the P. . rittable hood Workbook,. and she gives you the link.. . So just to review, we are training. Betty to answer your questions.. . We've gathered a lot of information over. the years, and one of the comments. . that people often make is they have. trouble finding things on our website.. . So please contact us so we can get Betty. . trained to help you the best we can and. best she can with her limited skill set.. . Okay, so at the risk of repeating myself,. . please try Betty, and then brag to your. kids and your grandkids that you used AI. . and you use chat GPT,. and you're just with it with all the rest. . of the people that are going crazy. in the world with all of this stuff.. . And remember, she's not. going out to the internet.. . She's not risking any security issues.. . She's looking at our data to give. you the answers you want.. . Okie dokey.. Hoods.. . Let's talk about hoods.. . And a while ago, I got really crazy,. and I started making little sweaters. . for my inch doll,. for my little inch Elsa doll.. . And one of the things that I got. really interested in was hoods.. . And so I would knit her a few little. . sweaters, and it all came. together in a workbook.. . I wrote this book.. . It is a printable book that you. can just download and print it.. . I've got the Q R code here.. . If you want to stick your phone up against. . your computer screen,. you can actually click that.. . It'll take you to knititnow.. . Com hood book.. . And in the hood book, I'll be following. a lot of what is in that book today.. . We're talking about the different. types of hoods and how to knit them.. . And in the book are worksheets and cheat. . sheets that you can put your own. numbers in and create your own hoods.. . So if you take a look at knititnow.. . Com hoodbook.. . Got it.. . So we talked about Elsa.. . Elsa, we had fun taking. that picture of Elsa in a mirror.. . I remember doing that.. . That was been a while ago.. . So how do you knit your own hoods?. . Let's think about knitting. construction of a sweater itself.. . I've just got a very simple. little Elsa sweater here.. . As a matter of fact, there is a pattern.. . It's called Elsa ,. and it's a great practice sweater so. . that you can practice a lot of different. things, hems and trims and bands. . and necklines, shaping necklines. and adding bands and adding hoods.. . So Elsa is the name of the pattern.. . Then you're going to end up. with something that looks like this.. . So we've got ourselves a little sweater.. . It's got a hole cut in it.. . It's got the neckline cut in it.. . So what's a hood?. . A hood is basically just going to take. . that pick up those stitches. from that neckline.. . And instead of knitting maybe a 1 inch. . band, you're just going to knit. further up and knit a hood.. . So it's all we did on this one.. . So here's Elsa's little sweater.. . I picked up this neck opening,. knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit,. . knit, knit, knit, knit, knit up straight,. and then joined the top with the seam.. . So nothing mysterious there.. . It's a rectangle, for heaven's sakes.. . And more than likely,. you would do a better job than I did.. . I bound off that top seam and sewed it,. . but it would sure be a whole lot better if. I had Kitchener stitched it.. . That way it would look like. this was one big piece.. . You wouldn't even see the seam.. . It'd still have the point, but whatever.. . So this is your basic hood shape.. . Just pick the whole thing up.. . Here are some.... . I'll come back to this particular drawing,. . but again, it's basically a rectangle. you're knitting to create yourself a hood.. . So the simple hood,. . just pick up that neckline, knit. straight up, and seam it across the top.. . This one I'm calling the sideways hood,. and it's what if. . you don't have enough needles on the. needle bed to pick up that neck opening?. . Pick up half the neck opening.. . Just pick up half the neck opening,. up and over.. . So it would be up and over,. and you end up with the seam at the back.. . Again, you got a point,. but it's a rectangle.. . So what could you do. to get rid of that point?. . One of the things we talk about in the. book is shaping that little point there.. . Just do some short row shaping so. that you eliminate this point.. . I have a thing about the point.. . Okay, so the next shape would be. what I'm calling a simple sideways.. . Just pick up and create yourself a. rectangle and stitch it down.. . So you don't have to worry about whether. . you have enough needles. to pick this up or not.. . Just knit yourself a hood, one direction. or the other, and sew it to the garment.. . Again, if you make a rectangle,. you're going to end up with a point.. . But that's okay.. It's cute.. . And especially as the hood,. . the sweater is worn, it's got. that cute little point there.. . I think it's not so bad.. Cute.. . So. the simple sideways is just pick up or. . just cast on, maybe cast. on from this front edge.. . So cast on a hem or cast on a pretty edge. . from the front and knit your hood back. and attach it to your garment.. . Pretty, pretty, pretty.. . My favorite is the T shaped hood.. . And this particular one is my favorite. because I keep saying the word point.. . It really gets rid of the point.. . Let's take a look at the shape of it.. . Let me go back here.. . On the top center here, you can. see that there is a T shaped hood.. . So the face is in three parts.. . I will show you on the sweater.. . So here's the face.. . You've got one edge, you've got. another edge, and another edge.. . And you can see. that the thing is shaped like that.. . Yeah, get rid of the point.. . Would be really pretty if you were doing. some a cable up the center of that T.. . So not only do you get the nice shaping. . of the hood, but you can also incorporate. some stitch pattern in there.. . So that's the fourth and probably. my favorite shape is that T shaped hood.. . You could do a cable or some other. decoration on the simple sideways.. . You got lots of different ones,. lots of different options.. . And that's what I wanted to really,. really impress on you today.. . You don't need to just made a plain old. straight hood with a big old point there.. . There are things that you. can do to shape the hood.. . We did a live on this when I. was first playing with hoods.. . And Nancy, Man, Jerry suggested. . making the hood, and I haven't. tried this and I should.. . Said, making the hood like you would. . the toe or heel of a sock. by using short rows.. . So you would just knit up and short row. . down, down, down, down, down,. and short row back, back, back, back,. . back until you get that shape. of a picture of a heel.. . So you'd be sticking a heel on your head.. . So another type of hood.. . Tons and tons and tons. of options with hoods.. . All right, let's go back to here.. . In the book and in the classroom,. . the hood s classroom is a construction. diagram that I created.. . Comparing these four different styles,. how would you work the face edge?. . The edge, on most of mine, I hand knit.. . I use I use garter stitch on this one.. . So plan on doing some hand work of some. sort, or do that simple sideways one where. . you pick up and you start at the face. edge, and then you can have a nice hem.. . So looking at the chart,. . it's actually the quick and easy. has that decorative cast on edge.. . Put a tassel on the point.. . Actually, make it a design element.. . Yes, absolutely.. . Thanks, Jean.. . On the neck edge, when you compare these. different styles, you can pick up the full. . neck edge with the simple rectangle. if you have enough needles.. . The sideways version,. pick up half the neck edge.. . The quick and easy,. you knit the piece first and then sew it. . to the neck edge, so you don't. have needle bed limitation there.. . And the same thing with the T shape.. . You can go either way with the T shape.. . We talk about where the seam is.. . Do you want the seam. at the top of the head?. . Do you want the seam in the back?. . Do you want the seam with the T shape?. . You've got two seams with that little T. that comes across the top of the head.. . And we talk about.... . So this comparison chart is really helpful. . to help you decide which. style of hood you want to tunnel.. . So it's so easy for me to say,. Just net, just do it.. . First question you're going to ask is,. How many stitches do I pick up?. . How many rows do I knit?. . So just a little bit of math involved.. . You can do that by hand. if you're so inclined.. . We do offer a tool.. . We have our hood Builder tool. under Patterns and Charting tools.. . It should be no echo.. . Melody, I'll answer your. question in just one sec.. . Under in our charting tools,. you could just click right here on this. . little button in the diagram. to get to the hood tool.. . Use the tool.. . We're or you can go to patterns,. charting tools, and just scroll down here. . and find this charting tool,. the hood tool, the hood builder.. . So the hood builder was just made. . to answer that question, how many stitches. do I cast on and how many rows do I knit?. . Let's just put in and .. . And let's pretend my neck gage is .. . I'm going to choose one of those.. . I'm going to use that chart and choose one. of these designs, one of these shapes,. . and the tool will give you. all the information you need.. . Cast on stitches, knit for rows,. . create your little T, and. have fun with your knitting.. . So Melody asked,. Why isn't the neckline shaped?. . You could shape the neckline.. . What I did was most of these were very. . short, high necklines, and so there. really didn't need to be any shaping.. . But let's say we had a garment that had. . a wide V neck, and we. wanted to put a hood on it.. . You'd have to fill in this section. . a little bit here,. and we cover that in the workbook and give. . you some instruction as to how to fill. in this section so that you not only have. . a rectangle over the head, but you have. something filling in the neckline.. . So good question, Melody.. . So that's the hood tool.. . The hood tool, you can also. access it from the classroom.. . We go to the classroom and there's tons. and tons and tons of tons of information. . in the classroom,. as well as a link to the workbook. . and the tool and the previous. live that we did on this.. . And there's some other videos in there.. . So there's all kinds of good. information about it.. . Knititnow.. . Com hoods takes you. directly to the classroom.. . So the other thing we have is that tool. . that I just showed you built. right into our patterns.. . And instead of you building yourself. . a pattern and then going, Okay, where. do I have to go find that tool again?. . The tool is now built right in.. . So if we go to a pattern,. I'm going to go to.... . Let's see, my patterns.. I don't know where it is.. . Let's find one.. . I know that Prickly Pair. has the hood built right in.. . You can see the little. icon here and a link.. . This is indicating that this pattern. has the hood tool built right in.. . I'm going to actually rebuild this. pattern so that you can see it.. . Before it's built,. I'm going to modify this.. . Once I get in, I've got the back,. . the fronts, the sleeves, and the neck. band, and some finishing instructions.. . And the last thing here is the custom. . hood, which will take me to a tool,. a built in tool in pattern.. . It already knows what my stitch gage is.. . It already knows what my row gage is. . because I'm working from. right within my pattern.. . It also already knows how many stitches. . are in my neckline,. and it prompts it there.. . And I can add my height.. . I can modify my height here and choose. one of my styles, my hood styles.. . It generates my knitting instructions. . for me, and I can stick. them right in my pattern.. . So now I have a pattern that's got. . the hood tool, the hood. instructions right with it.. . Now, to go back to Melody's question,. . that is assuming that you're. not going to add any extra.. . And so that's just going to give. you a basic hood from a neck up.. . So if you need to do any short rowing or. any additional to fill in, say,. . a deep V neck, you would. need to do that on your own.. . Would you block the garment. before measuring for the neck?. . Yes.. . Just like you would if you were. measuring or picking up for a neck band.. . If you normally block for your neck bands. . and calculate your own neck bands,. you'd need to block.. . So we've got a hood tool.. . Let's see, we talked about a workbook,. we talked about the classroom,. . we talked about the tool,. using that tool from within a pattern.. . So we got lots of stuff going. on at Knit It Now about hoods.. . Did I tell you that I. got excited about hoods?. . One of the other options you have is. . to use Design in it or some. other charting software.. . Let design design in it,. . figure out what your neck opening is,. how many stitches to pick up, and then. . create a new piece and design in it. to the shape of whatever hood you want.. . Which goes back again to Melody's. . question, if this was a deep V neck here,. designing it then could fill in that space. . for that V neck so that we could get. on yet another shape of a hood. . coming from a different or a deeper. round neck, even neckline.. . So use design in it.. . I just recently released a new course.. . I learned design in it.. . It's a hoodie.. . So it's a raglan sweater.. . We're exploring raglan suiters. with a hood and a pocket.. . So this learn design in it.. Com.. . Hoodie is the newest course. and it's on sale.. . The course is on sale and all. . of the design in it courses. are on sale until Friday.. . And we're giving % off of all. of our design in it courses.. . So if you've been thinking about taking. a design in it course now is the time. . to do it because we don't. do this very often.. . So we talked about four ways of adding. . a hood, charting your. own, using the Knit It Now hood builder,. . using the Knit It Now hood builder within. a pattern, or using design a knit.. . And I really, really suggest that you try. it on maybe the Elsa pattern,. . or our practice neckline pattern,. or any pattern that you might have,. . and just take a look at how hoods are. constructed and how they'd work for you.. . Play with one that's got a deep V neck.. . Play with one that's. got a deep round neck.. . Use that hood workbook.. . It gives you tons of information and tons. of chances to fill in the blanks with your. . own gage and your own measurements. and figure out the construction of hoods.. . I started this whole thing by saying you. can use any pattern and make it a hoodie.. . The key to it is understanding. the construction.. . Are you going to be knitting it this way?. . You're going to be knitting it this way?. . You're going to be knitting it this way?. . Are you going to put T in it?. . Are you going to make a big. . heel or toe and stick it on your head. or whatever else you have in mind?. . Understand the construction of hoods,. . and then you can add them to any pattern. patter, no matter what pattern it is,. . whether you're using a hand knitting. pattern or designing it or something else.. . If you understand the construction, you. can add a hood to any knitting pattern.. . Tina said the deck courses are great.. . Learned so much there.. . Thank you, thank you, thank you, Tina.. . This new one is really. fun with the raglans.. . Raglans are a bit of a challenge. . everywhere for any designer. and even for design in it.. . They're a little bit of a challenge.. . You really have to go through. each one of the steps.. . Again, understand. . that neck opening and the relationship. of the neck opening to that raglan seam.. . That design in that course was really. . detailed and we've had a lot. of good comments about it.. . All righty, so last but not least,. coming up is Ogalyn Jolly from Oh Jolly.. . She is the expert on cut and sew.. . And she also has taken on the name.... . What is the name of that new machine?. . The Knitter it Machine.. . She's also been working with them on using. that brand new Knitter it machine.. . She got one, she's played with it,. she's using it, she's documenting it,. . and she's doing all sorts. of fun things with it.. . So she will be coming. and talking with us next month.. . This time, this place, Wednesday,. September sixth, we'll have her.. . And it will probably be using Zoom,. but you'll come to the same place.. . Just come to knitted now.. . Com live.. . We'll get you to the right place.. . And she has a little. presentation to give us.. . She she's a machine knitter,. so she understands what we're doing.. . She also does a lot with sweater knits,. manufactured sweater knits, sewing them.. . So that's one of her big focuses.. . So she's got a lot to teach us,. and I'm really excited about meeting her. . and also seeing what she has. to share with us next month.. . Hocky dokey.. . Well, besides all the usual technical. craziness, I think we're good.. . Anything that anybody has any questions?. . If I missed a question in the chat,. please contact me after.. . It always breaks my heart if. I don't hear from someone.. . If you have a question, please,. I'm happy to answer it.. . Next meeting does sound terrific.. . I'm really, really excited about it.. . So I know it's not.. . Spend some time thinking about hoods,. spend some time thinking about raglan. . sweaters, spend some time. thinking about designs.. . What are you going to knit next?. . Y ou know, my whole. thing is planning ahead.. . So September will be rolling around.. . It'll be cooling down.. . What's your first project?. . Make a commitment.. . Let us know in the heartbeat community. . at Knit It Now, what's your. next project going to be?. . Is it going to be a sweater for a child,. a sweater for yourself?. . What are you going to do with it. that's a little bit different?. . Now, when it's hot,. is the time to plan and practice some. . of those different things that you might. want to think about doing in the fall.. . When it comes time that you can actually. . sit down and put some dedicated time. at that machine, you'll be all set.. . You'll have some skills in your back. . pocketand some knowledge. and a plan in your back pocket.. . So let us know in heartbeat what you're. . planning and what's going. on for you in the fall.. . All right.. If anybody else has anything, let me know.. . I think I covered everything I wanted to.. . New stuff coming up, new patterns.. .
