What Makes the LK150 Knitting Machine So Popular?

If you’ve spent any time in the machine knitting world, you’ve probably heard of the Silver Reed LK150. This mid-gauge plastic bed machine has a devoted following—and for good reason. So, why is the LK150 so popular? Let’s break it down.

Lightweight and Portable

The LK150 is made of durable plastic, making it light enough to carry. Many knitters travel with it—some even pack it in a case and clamp it to a hotel vanity. No metal bed, no heavy lifting—just easy, on-the-go knitting.

Simple to Learn

This machine is beginner-friendly. It doesn’t have a lot of buttons or levers, and the learning curve is gentle. With just four main concepts—tension, needle positions, patterning levers, and hand manipulation—most knitters can get started quickly.

Versatile Yarn Use

With 6.5mm needle spacing, the LK150 is a mid-gauge machine that works beautifully with commonly available hand-knitting yarns—from sock weight to light worsted. You don’t need to invest in specialty yarns to get great results.

Affordable and Accessible

Compared to electronic machines, the LK150 is budget-friendly and widely available. It’s a smart entry point for new machine knitters or a great second machine for hand knitters with a stash to burn through.

The LK150 offers professional results without the high price tag—making it the ideal entry point for knitters ready to explore machine knitting.

What Can You Knit?

While it's not ideal for everything, the LK150 can handle a wide range of projects:

  • Blankets, scarves, and accessories
  • Sweaters and garments (with shaping tools or software)
  • Socks (yes, even socks!)

You can even use DesignaKnit for shaping and stitch design support.

Useful Accessories

The LK150 supports many handy tools:

Some accessories are discontinued, so keep an eye out on secondhand sites.

Tengo una LK150 desde varios años atrás. Me encanta porque el tejido queda muy similar al hecho con dos agujas. Es muy versátil y me gusta mucho la manipulación manual I've had an LK150 for several years. I love it because the knitting is very similar to knitting with two needles. It's very versatile, and I really enjoy the manual manipulation.
