In-the-round: Hem? Ribbing?

Options for in-the-round hats

  1. Hand knit ribbing
    • Start with waste yarn and ravel cord (leaving open stitches)
    • Knit the hat and finish the top as desired
    • With a circular needle or double point needles, pick up the live stitches and hand knit ribbing in the round
  2. Mock ribbing
    • Cast on over every other needle (be sure to cast on an even number of stitches)
    • Knit over every other needle for 2" (or 2x the depth of your mock-rib hem)
    • Put all needles into work
    • Knit the hat and finish the top as desired
    • Fold the hem up 1" and loosely stitch it in place
    • Remember mock rib isn't as stretchy as regular ribbing
  3. Doubled Ear Warmer
    • Cast on (open or closed) knit for 2"-3" (enough to cover the ears)
    • Knit a turning row
    • Knit the same length again (2-3")
    • Knit a marker row
    • Knit the hat and finish the top as desired
    • Join the cast on edge to the body of the hat at the marker row and LOOSELY stitch in place
  4. Inside-out (doubled) hat
