In-the-round: Hem? Ribbing?
Options for in-the-round hats
- Hand knit ribbing
- Start with waste yarn and ravel cord (leaving open stitches)
- Knit the hat and finish the top as desired
- With a circular needle or double point needles, pick up the live stitches and hand knit ribbing in the round
- Mock ribbing
- Cast on over every other needle (be sure to cast on an even number of stitches)
- Knit over every other needle for 2" (or 2x the depth of your mock-rib hem)
- Put all needles into work
- Knit the hat and finish the top as desired
- Fold the hem up 1" and loosely stitch it in place
- Remember mock rib isn't as stretchy as regular ribbing
- Doubled Ear Warmer
- Cast on (open or closed) knit for 2"-3" (enough to cover the ears)
- Knit a turning row
- Knit the same length again (2-3")
- Knit a marker row
- Knit the hat and finish the top as desired
- Join the cast on edge to the body of the hat at the marker row and LOOSELY stitch in place

- Inside-out (doubled) hat
- Cast on in the round and knit the hat double the desired length
- Use the Knit it Now Inside-Out Hat pattern
- Fold in half and secure the cast on edge
