I discovered a new trick this week for marking steel knitting machine beds.

 

I used a Sanford Tuff Stuff Eraser Stick. The tip is quite small so it's easy to mark just the needle/s you want to mark. Plus, it shows up rather whitish so is easier to see than pencil marks. I'm finding it an invaluable marking technique while making a rather complex traveling cable-paneled sweater.
