Can you do fair isle using a ribber? I was thinking about knitting a sweater in the round using a rubber and have some fair isle patterns on the bottom of the sweater and sleeves.

I'm sorry, no this won't work unless you hand manipulate the fairisle on the ribber side.

Stitch patterning only happens on the main bed. 

You could knit the fairisle sections flat, then scrap off and re-hang the work on the main bed and ribber in a tube, then continue knitting the pieces in the round.  IMHO that's a lot of work to avoid seams. ðŸ˜
