Is anyone familiar with the term Japanese Cast on?

I wasn't, but I found a tutorial which suggested that it is a handknitting technique also known as a Chain-Edge Cast On, a Chained Cast On or a Bind-off (or Cast-off) Cast On.  It is apparently worked with a crochet hook and knitting needle  It looks nice.

Thanks @Jenny M Benson!
It looks like it could also be called the Chinese Waitress Cast on.  It's a variation of a crochet (chain) cast on that could be worked on the machine.

Personally, I'd work it on hand knitting needles, then transfer the stitches to the machine ðŸ˜‰

Here's a link to a Youtube video  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ragBNdHwjg8

In the video she refers to an excellent book "Cast on, Bind Off" by Cap Sease.  It's for hand knitting, but many of the techniques could be adapted for the machine.
