Can anyone help here. I want to do a bit fairisle up the arm of a cardi but don't know/or remember how to do just this bit as I only have a little bit of yarn. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

We need more information, Morag.  When you say "up the arm" do you mean you want some row of FI between the stockinet rows, or do you mean a narrow vertical stripe of FI running from wrist to shoulder?  If the latter, it depends whether you are knitting the sleeve from wrist up or shoulder down, or whether you are knitting the sleeve sideways.  Assuming a vertical stripe on a vertical sleeve you would need to use the Single Motif setting.
