Hi,
I have a whole box of leftover worsted weight yarns and I plan/hope to use up some of it as contrasting colours in a fairisle sweater. 

I have decided to buy a coordinating colour to be a base.  Do I buy this base colour in the same amount as what I would normally use for the sweater?  Can anyone help me with determining how much yarn I might need?

I'd first determine how much yarn I'd need for the sweater.  Then I'd purchase at least 1/2 that amount for the base color.
