A fellow Knitter, Jill is interested in knitting this scarf on the machine.  Below are some Ideas I came up with ... ideas or suggestions anyone?
[keyholescarf]

(These ribs are basically 1x1 ribbing, so picture every other needle on each of the beds.)

The following ideas are based on knitting tubular or "U" knitting - slipping stitches on one bed, while knitting stitches on the opposite bed.

Idea #1
Cast on and knit in Fisherman's rib (tuck on ribber only) or English rib (Alternate tuck on both beds) for about 6".
  1. Set the main bed to slip in both directions.
  2. Knit the desired "keyhole" length on the ribber only.
         - you'll be knitting over every other needle (similar to mock ribbing). This will allow the Keyhole strip to "pull in" similar to the photo
       -  NOTE: you'll need to add weight to the Keyhole strip as you knit it.  No small feat because the knitting will be "building up" between the beds. - Not impossible, but weight is critical so the stitches knit properly.
  3. Once the ribber strip is done, set the ribber to slip in both directions.
  4. Knit the other half of the keyhole strip on the main bed only.
    - NOTE: again - extra care and weight will be required to allow the stitches to form properly
  5. Once both keyhole sides are knit. Set the carriage to knit in ribbing (Fisherman's or English rib) and knit the center section of the scarf.

Repeat the Keyhole shaping and finish by knitting the final section of the scarf for 6"

Idea #2 (A little more work taking stitches on and off the beds, but not as fussy as adding weight as described above)

Cast on and knit in Fisherman's rib (tuck on ribber only) or English rib (Alternate tuck on both beds) for about 6".
  1. Scrap off the stitches on the main bed
  2. Continue knitting just the ribber stitches for the Keyhole section - adding weight so the stitches knit properly
  3. Scrap off the ribber knitting.
  4. Rehang the main bed stitches
  5. Knit the same length as the first keyhole section - again adding weight so the stitches knit properly
  6. Drop the ribber and rehang the ribber stitches on the main bed
    - Remember you've knit the Keyhole strips over every other needle
  7. Transfer the ribber stitches to the ribber.
  8. You should now be back to your 1x1 setup - every other needle on the ribber, every other needle on the main bed.
  9. Continue knitting the center section in ribbing
Repeat the Keyhole shaping and finish by knitting the final section of the scarf for 6"
