Annie asked: "How do I prevent the end needles from tucking or slipping when working in pattern?"
This is called "end needle selection"

Some Brother machines have a setting (KC I and KC II) that prevents the end needle from being selected (for example no tuck on the edge stitch)
Because Brother machines pre-select needles, you can also manually position the end needles so they don't select (tuck)
  • My Singer 360 recommends pushing the end needles to D position to prevent them from patterning
  • My Silver 860 has point cams to prevent the edge stitches from selecting.

Various machines, various schemes ... We started a topic in the forum on this subject. Do you have input on "End Needle Selection"?
