Thanks again Sue and Matt!
Ritta K
Thanks Sue!!
Sue Jalowiec
@ritta don't need brand specific, but you need pitch specific .. IE 4.5mm 6 mm.. etc
Jennifer J
Great show today!
Jennifer J
Thanks! Sue!
Sue Jalowiec
@jennifer ... you don't need a special stand ... just make sure your table is sturdy. The double bed setup gets heavy
Marie-Jo C
Sorry for insisiting upon th V necks ! thank you and see you later
Jennifer J
I bought a brother with a ribber do I need a special stand or can I just use a table to set them both up on?
Ritta K
Is a bulky cast on comb a bulky cast on comb or do I need one from the maker of my knitting machine?
SANDY W
tHANKS sUE! hAVE BEEN HESITATING ON STARTING A V-NECK. tHINK I WILL GIVE IT A GO NOW!

Dee Z
Thanks Sue!
Patricia H
Thank you Sue!
Suzanne S
Thanks--good info today!
SHIRLEY R
A wooden or metal ruler is better than a tape mesure
Cynthia P
could you tell me if there is a section on understandign those rulers that come with the machines. if not could you explain itnother time
Nancy M
I have used hand knit patterns that did not even give a row gauge... just knit for 3"....
Annie L
Knit Radar rulers
SHIRLEY R
These are gauges not strictly rulers
Dee Z
machine vs. hand... depends on the hand - some folks knit looser and some tighter. there is no correlation unless it's a specific hand knitting and that person's knitting machine. Each machine is different just as each person is different.
Wilma T
Green, yellow, blue ruler depending on machine gauge
Jane N
No, that was sarcastic..an inch is an inch no matter how many rows or stitches in it
SHIRLEY R
Green, blue etc
Phyllis K D
Maybe they are talking about a swatch that's hand knit, compared to a swatch that's machine knitted. It only makes sense if we're talking about two different swatches.
Jill F
gauge
Nancy R
I’m not sure, but I think we’re talking about ratios for picking up stitches. At least that’s what I was talking about.
Ann P
Green Ruler?
Magda C
block with steam only. or wash the swatch ? tks
Annie L
Rest, Block and wash.
Hope R
Thanks everybody!
Marie-Jo C
Do you think that the v necks are deep enough in the basics patterns ?
Ann P
MHO is not to block
Cindy Minota
I always like homework-thanks. The neckline course will help us all!
Hope R
Jean, yes. I block my swatch. Should I block the neck (front and back) before I measure for the band pick up?
Jane N
Good to know that hand knitters use a different ruler than machine knitters...
Phyllis K D
...will experience.
Ann P
"Experts"in magazines have informed that you need more rows for machine knitting than handknitting.
Jean S
I always block my swatches...does Hope mean the knitted piece before knitting the neckband?
Phyllis K D
The swatch should reflect the same conditions as the garment will be experience.
Dee Z
you should treat your garment like you treat your swatch... if you block the swatch and measure you should block the garment pieces before you measure.
Jane N
All of this depends upon what one does with their swatch
Cindy Minota
But math helps give us a base #--and changing a yarn will sure mess with what you are used to doing!
Nancy R
When I hand knit a yarn that’s 4 stitches per inch, it usually needs fewer rows per inch than when I machine knit the same yarn. If the machine is 4 stitches per inch, the number of rows comes out higher the hand knit swatch.
Ann P
I don't stretch it a little bit. then see how it looks and adjust before knitting. Ive beenknitting a long time
Hope R
Should you block before you measure?
Eleanor L
Use the Magic Formula.Sometimes it works to pick up 2 skip one and alternate with pick up 3 skip one.
Nancy R
Knitting machines need more rows per inch than hand knitting.
Jennifer J
Also in hand knitting you always decrease the needle a size or two. Maybe that makes up for the extra stitches that you cast on doing 3sts to 4 rows
Hope R
I have ripped out many bands
Mary Ann B
I'm with Cindy as well. Thanks.
Jennifer J
I agree Cindy Minotaur!
Ann P
Really,I just present the knitting to the machine and guess!
Gio R
Yes 3 out of 4 rows
Cindy Minota
That helps me, cuz I always do 3/4 but I does NOT always work-the math is a better way! Thanks!
Kelly C
Jenny what do you mean about reversing the work?
Jennifer J
3 to 4 rows, yup!
Ann P
2 sts to 3 rows
Annie L
Is there a tool?
Hope R
Your sample really helps explain what you are saying.
Gio R
37 stitches?
Nancy M
I often use a row of 1x1 tuck as turn
Dawn W
Does the tension grading also apply to a ribbed neckband?
Hope R
With sewing a knit band, they always tell you to make it about an inch smaller than the garment neckline.
Jenny M B
Reversing the work and doing one row for the turning row of a stockinet band makes a lovely edge.
Jean S
have never tried making 1 row knit llooser...just lower the tension?
Jane N
will you be talking about number of stitches to pick up for a V Neck??
Lise P
Hi a little late lol
SHIRLEY R
Bind it off
Kelly C
waste yarn
Nancy R
I learned to put hand knit on stitch holders and pick them up. But as I said before, that’s for ribbed necklines. If you do stocking stitch, it doesn’t look so good.
Annie L
Be careful to not take out to much of the stretch or it will not fit over your head.
Hope R
I agree with Barbara P - binding off gives stability.
Lorraine L
center in hold for a funnel neckline
Wilma T
Center back I do cast off, also for stability, the sweater won’t stretch doing it this way
Marianne M
I mostly knit a ribbing band or a ss band that I attach separately.
Ann P
Back neck partial knitting.
Jane N
Fudge more stitches at the shoulder
Tamara A
Hi Sue
Barbara P
Binding off on the back neck gives it greater stability. So the back neck doesn't stretch out too much.
Jennifer J
Binding all of then picking back up for ribbed collar is the hand knit way that I learned.
Marianne M
Middle stitches on hold, short row on the sides. When I have finished each side, I pick up stitches on the straight sides and then knit one row on main yarn, and then waste yarn.
Bonnie L. C
I put them in hold at the center and knit over all when completing both side of neckline.
Ann P
I take the sts at the left off and the centre needles onto a circular needle.
Wilma T
I was taught it that way also, stopped doing theatre. Take off the whole sweater on WY now
Nancy R
It depends on what you want to accomplish. When I hand knit from live stitches, usually I’m doing ribbing for the neckline.
Cindy Minota
As a hand knitter, I tried to machine knit according to the manuals but I prefer to bind off!
Deborah F
Sometimes depending on pattern in both machine and hand
Jere B
I try to bind off but it always seems to pull on one side
Lyn R
Was taught to bind off
Jane N
No, One side in hold, work one side, then scrap off, and knit the other side
Jean S
I bind off as well
Mary Ann B
I do, I like the ease of picking up the stitches.
Ken S
No, I bind off
Cynthia P
i do it both ways depending
Terry S
Yes, I scrap them off

yes...off on waste yarn
Maria Ann
I've shaped the neckline both ways
Jennifer J
Why would you?
