Reduce the number of needles in work usually by doubling up stitches. Example: Decrease at beg of row

Unless you only want to knit blankets or scarves, increasing and decreasing is top on your list of skills to master.

There are a number of ways for machine knitters to decrease. For basic shaping like sleeves, transferring stitches along the edge of the knitting is the most common method.
