Picture Knitting | Intarsia

A technique that allows color changes in the middle of the row without having floats across the back of the knitting

Intarsia can be worked in different ways:
  • Manual:
Using slip or hold, each color is worked with a single pass of the carriage. It will take multiple passes of the carriage to knit multiple colors across the row.
  • Built-in Intarsia Setting:
Some machines can knit intarsia in one pass of the carriage with a carriage setting. Lay strands of yarn across the needles to be knit and pass the carriage, knitting multiple colors across the row.
  • Intarsia Carriage:
Some machines offer an intarsia carriage accessory. This replaces the knitting carriage. Lay strands of yarn across the needles to be knit and pass the carriage, knitting multiple colors across the row.
No matter what method is used, it it important to twist the yarns where they join to prevent holes.
