Gauge

Gauge is a measure of the number of stitches in a specific area.

Gauge is commonly measured:

  • Stitches and rows PER INCH
  • ~or~
  • stitches and rows PER 4" (10cm)

NOTE:
The term "gauge" can also refer to the pitch of a knitting machine. For example a machine with needles that are 4.5mm apart is referred to as a STANDARD GAUGE machine
Common terms:
  • 3.5mm = Fine Gauge
  • 4.5mm = Standard Gauge
  • 6 / 6.5 / 7 mm = Mid-Gauge
  • 9mm = Bulky Gauge
