As machine knitters, it's important that the yarn is "put up" so it can easily pass through the yarn tensioner for knitting.

Yarn that is put up in skeins and hanks cannot be used for machine knitting unless it is wound on a cone or in balls (or cakes).

Many machine knitters will also re-wind yarn into balls and check for knots before using it for machine knitting.
