Bridging
A machine knitting technique where only selected needles are knit while others are held. Used for shaping, buttonholes, cables, and decorative effects by building up stitches in one area while skipping over others.
The term "bridging" was coined by long-time machine knitter Susan Guagliumi, know for her hand manipulated techniques on the machine.
